Using my acquired knowledge from Freud’s lectures, I am now able to deeply analyze the complexities of certain pieces of writing. In my analyzation, I stated my points in a confident and meticulous tone to properly display to my audience how Freud’s concepts could be used to inspect an intriguing text. This audience being my collegiate professors, fellow students, and others interested in Freud’s techniques for analyzing the mind. I had written an academic essay that particularly focused on how by using a Freudian lens, an individual could deeply examine the complexity of certain relationship dynamics in a text, along with how these relationships can affect the characters of the text. I explained to my audience how when looking further into the overbearing paternal relationship in “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner with Freud’s concepts of repression, resistance, and symptom in mind, it was clear that the relationship between the main character of the story, Emily Grierson, and her father was severely detrimental to Emily’s psyche. I was able to explain this concept through my specific thesis statement on the topic and supporting evidence from Freud’s second lecture and Faulkner’s work. I also made it a point to describe to my audience how Freud’s teachings could be used to decipher Faulkner’s writing.
Writing this paper was very difficult as I wanted to ensure that I provided my audience with a proper synthesis of Freuds text and Faulkner’s short story rather than a summary of both. I wanted to provide a proper study of Faulkner’s piece through the assistance of Freud’s teachings. The purpose of me writing this essay was to demonstrate how through proper inspection, a text can reveal key information an author wishes to give to their reader. By illustrating how Freud’s ideas can be used as reasonings for events in the text, my audience would be able to see the true depth of the relationship between Emily and her father. I wanted my audience to use my synthesis to develop the skillset that would allow them to recognize the true power relationships can have on an individual.
Through this essay, I was able to enhance my analytical thinking skills and improve how I analyze pieces of writing. Rather than merely looking at the surface of the text, I unveiled intricate details that would have normally been missed which has improved my skills as a writer. By writing multiple draft, I had the ability to create multiple versions of my thesis until it was just right, along with identify weak points in my writing where I began to summarize rather than synthesize. However, I believe I could have provided much more detailed explanations when demonsting how Freud could be used to explain the text. In future pieces, I hope to provide clear and thorough reasoning’s for my ideas rather than just adequate analyzations.
